Alex is primarily involved in drafting and prosecuting European, UK, and foreign patent applications across a variety of fields, specialising in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. He also has experience of opposition and appeal matters before the European Patent Office.
Alex works with a broad range of clients, from large multinational companies to start-ups and SMEs both in the UK and Europe as well as further afield, providing tailored advice to support their business needs.
In his spare time, Alex enjoys playing the piano, cooking, and has also been known to reluctantly go for the occasional run.
Alex works across a variety of technical areas, but particular specialisms include:
- Small molecule pharmaceuticals
- Polymer materials such as semiconductors and films
- Inks and other printing compositions
- Consumer chemistry, including detergent formulations and personal care products
- Acoustic products
- Vacuum cleaner technology

Before joining the profession, Alex graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Master’s degree in Chemistry. His Master’s research project focused on the development of novel methodologies for the synthesis of quinoline derivatives with industrial, chemical, and medicinal importance.
Alex joined GJE in 2017 and qualified as a UK and European patent attorney in 2021.
